Kawardha Palace

Editorial Note: One of the finest preserved princely residences of Central India, designed and built between 1936 and 1939.

Commissioned by King Dharamraj Singh, the ruler of Kawardha State, Kawardha Palace stands as a rare and captivating architectural synthesis of European neoclassical and traditional Indian princely styles. Built using locally quarried golden sandstone and imported Italian marble, the palace remains in the possession of the royal family of Kawardha.

The Architecture & Darbar Hall

The palace's centerpiece is the imposing Darbar Hall, featuring grand twenty-foot ceilings, period Belgian crystal chandeliers, tiger skins, antique silver thrones, and portraits of the erstwhile rulers. Massive marble archways open onto breezy colonnaded verandahs that look out across formal sunken gardens, mango groves, and peacocks strolling through the grounds.

A section of the palace operates as a boutique heritage retreat, welcoming visitors looking to experience vintage Chhattisgarhi princely hospitality. Visits to the private grounds and Darbar Hall require prior permission or heritage booking.
