Radha Krishna Mandir

Historic 180-year-old temple complex built by King Ujiyar Singh in the heart of old Kawardha.

Stone entrance and sanctum pavilion of historic Radha Krishna Mandir Kawardha
Editorial Note: The premier spiritual sanctum in the town center of Kawardha, active with daily devotional rituals for nearly two centuries.

Erected around 180 years ago by King Ujiyar Singh of the Kawardha princely state, the Radha Krishna Mandir stands prominently at Rajmahal Chowk. Built with carved stone pillars, elevated arched pavilions, and a courtyard paved with flagstones, it remains an integral part of the daily life of Kawardha residents.

The Sacred Complex

The inner sanctum enshrines beautifully adorned black stone and marble murtis of Lord Krishna and Radha. Below the main temple floor lie historic subterranean meditation chambers (bhomiyara), once used by royal ascetics and yogis for quiet contemplation. During the festivals of Janmashtami, Holi, and Radhashtami, the courtyard fills with devotional music, classical kirtans, and thousands of devotees from neighboring villages.
