In a monumental development that promises to end Kawardha's historic status as a rail-isolated district headquarters, the Central Government and the Ministry of Railways have officially greenlit the Dongargarh–Khairagarh–Kawardha–Katghora New Rail Line Project with a revised sanctioned budget of ₹6,947 crore.

The approval came following high-level coordination meetings in New Delhi between Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, and Rajnandgaon-Kabirdham Member of Parliament Santosh Pandey, marking the formal resolution of a citizen demand spanning more than three decades.

Project Specifications & Route Alignment

The upcoming rail line provides a dedicated broad-gauge corridor cutting directly through the western agro-industrial belt of Chhattisgarh:

• Corridor Length: Approximately 295 route kilometres.
• Project Investment: Revised sanctioned outlay of ₹6,947 crore (up from the preliminary 2018 survey estimate of ₹4,821 crore).
• Planned Stations: 27 railway stations slated across the alignment, featuring a major junction station at Kawardha and vital crossing halts at Pandariya, Khairagarh, Chhuikhadan, and Mungeli.
• Strategic Role: Serves as a crucial alternative route parallel to the congested Mumbai–Howrah main line (Nagpur–Bilaspur section), creating robust freight pathways for coal, cement, and agricultural produce while unlocking new passenger train routes.

Economic and Tourism Impetus for Kabirdham

The inclusion of Kawardha on the Indian Railways map is poised to transform the economic landscape of the district:

• Tourism Boost: Direct rail access will substantially ease tourist flow to the 11th-century Bhoramdeo Temple (often called the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh), Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary, and scenic Chilfi Ghati.
• Farmer & Trader Benefits: Direct transit for Kabirdham's massive sugarcane, paddy, and jaggery produce to major national markets without relying exclusively on road freight.
