Bhoramdeo & Madwa Mahal Heritage Trail

The Bhoramdeo & Madwa Mahal Heritage Trail (भोरमदेव हेरिटेज ट्रेल) is a 2-kilometer archaeological walking circuit set in the peaceful countryside of Chaura and Chapri villages, approximately 18 km west of Kawardha.

While the 11th-century Bhoramdeo Temple is the most celebrated monument in the valley, the surrounding rural landscape holds two equally significant 14th-century sister monuments built by the Phani Nagavanshi dynasty: Madwa Mahal and Cherki Mahal. Walking between these three ancient monuments gives you a sense of medieval stone architecture, royal history, and authentic rural Chhattisgarhi life.

Step-by-Step Walking Circuit

Stop 1: Bhoramdeo Temple & Holy Tank

Begin your walk at the primary Bhoramdeo Temple. Admire the soaring Nagara sikhara, the underground shivalinga sanctum, and the intricate outer friezes depicting deities, celestial nymphs (Apsaras), and royal processions overlooking the tranquil sacred pond.

Stop 2: Archaeological Site Museum (300m walk)

Exit the main temple gate and walk north across the shaded garden to the State Archaeological Museum. Examine the beautifully preserved stone statues of Uma-Maheshwara, Chamunda, and the Sun God Surya.

Stop 3: Madwa Mahal — The Royal Marriage Mandap (1 km walk)

Follow the peaceful paved rural lane heading east past village Chaura:

• The History: Built in 1349 CE by the Phani Nagavanshi king Raja Ramchandra Dev to commemorate his royal marriage to princess Ambika Devi of the Haihaya (Kalachuri) dynasty. Madwa translates to 'marriage pavilion' in Chhattisgarhi.
• Architecture: A roofed stone hall supported by 16 carved stone pillars, enclosing an underground sanctum.
• Sculptures & Epigraph: The exterior walls feature 54 erotic stone panels carved with Kama Sutra themes. Inside the mandap rests a famous stone slab recording the genealogy of 24 Nagavanshi kings.

Stop 4: Cherki Mahal — The Shepherd's Shrine (800m trail)

Continue along the rustic pathway through cultivated green fields toward Chapri village:

• The Legend: Cherki translates to 'goat/shepherd' in the local dialect. According to folklore, the shrine was constructed by or dedicated to a devoted local shepherd.
• Unique Structure: Built predominantly of unplastered medieval kiln-fired bricks mixed with stone, the shrine features a plain cubical sanctum with a Shiva lingam that continues to emit a natural sweet forest fragrance.

• Season: October to March is ideal. The surrounding fields are filled with bright yellow flowering mustard, and mornings are crisp and cool.

Are there any entry fees for the heritage trail?

Access to Bhoramdeo Temple, Madwa Mahal, and Cherki Mahal is completely free. A nominal entry ticket (₹10) applies only to the Archaeological Museum.
