Radha Krishna Mandir

Radha Krishna Mandir (श्री राधा कृष्ण मंदिर) is one of Kawardha’s most significant 19th-century royal heritage temples, situated prominently at Rajmahal Chowk in the historic center of the city. Commissioned approximately 180 years ago (c. 1840s) by Raja Ujiyar Singh, the visionary ruler of the Kawardha Princely State, the temple is an active center for Vaishnavite traditions.

With its weathered stone pillars, arched ceremonial mandap, and subterranean meditation rooms, the temple remains a central gathering point for Kawardha's residents today.

1. Royal Stone Craftsmanship & Arched Mandap

Unlike modern concrete shrines, the temple was built using locally quarried sandstone blocks and lime mortar. The central hall (Sabha Mandap) rests on hand-chiseled stone pillars with floral cornices, leading up to an elevated sanctum platform. The flagstone courtyard retains a cool, peaceful ambiance even during hot summer afternoons.

2. The Sacred Underground Chambers (Bhomiyara)

One of the most intriguing features of the temple is its historic subterranean chamber network, known locally as the Bhomiyara. Built beneath the main sanctum floor, these secluded underground stone cells were historically utilized by royal ascetics, Vaishnava saints, and visiting sadhus for silent mantra japa and extended winter meditation away from public view.

3. Presiding Murti & Altar

The inner sanctum houses beautifully sculpted idols of Lord Krishna and Radha Rani, traditionally decorated in colorful silk garments (Poshak), fresh floral malas, and silver crowns (Mukut). Daily morning and evening rituals are conducted according to traditional Pushtimargiya Vaishnava rites.

Major Festivals & Annual Celebrations

• Shri Krishna Janmashtami: The pinnacle festival of the temple year. The entire Rajmahal Chowk complex is illuminated with strings of lights. Devotees observe day-long fasts, culminate in midnight Maha Abhishek celebrations, and host the traditional Matki Phod ceremony the following day.
• Radhashtami: Special Chhappan Bhog offerings and classical kirtan programs held 15 days after Janmashtami.
• Phagotsav (Holi): Traditional Braj-style flower petal Holi and classical Chhattisgarhi Faag Geet performances in the temple courtyard.

• Finding the Temple: Located at Rajmahal Chowk, right adjacent to the old royal residential streets and within a 2-minute stroll of the historical Kawardha Palace.
• Photography: Photography of the exterior stone architecture and courtyard is permitted. Photography of the inner sanctum deities during active aarti should be done respectfully without flash.
